A dispatcher sat behind the counter with a headset over one ear. Two patrol officers were finishing reports near the back wall. The old clock above the bulletin board ticked louder than it needed to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Standing just inside the entrance was a child who looked far too small to be carrying so much fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She couldn\u2019t have been more than three.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She had blonde hair, tearful blue eyes, red cheeks, yellow rain boots, purple leggings, and a pink sweater with one sleeve stretched over her hand. In her arms, she clutched a stuffed rabbit so tightly its floppy ears were bent sideways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her mother stood beside her, blonde and worried, one hand resting protectively on the girl\u2019s shoulder. Her father lingered slightly behind them, tired, anxious, and clearly unsure whether this was an emergency, a parenting failure, or the strangest errand of his life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m sorry,\u201d he said to the officer at the front desk. \u201cWe know this is unusual. She\u2019s been begging us to bring her here since Monday.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officer Price looked at the little girl and softened immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She was a Black woman in her late forties, broad-shouldered, plus-size, with kind eyes and a calm face that made frightened people lower their voices without knowing why. She had been a police officer for twenty-one years. You can stay with your mom and dad. Nobody\u2019s in trouble right now. We\u2019re just talking.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maisie looked suspicious. \u201cRight now?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRight now,\u201d Price said. \u201cAnd probably after talking too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That answer seemed safe enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They moved to the wooden bench beside the front window, where people usually sat to report stolen bikes, dented mailboxes, or neighbors who had been arguing too loudly after midnight. Maisie climbed into her mother\u2019s lap but kept her eyes on Officer Price the entire time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Price pulled a chair close, sat backward on it, and folded her arms on the top rail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAll right,\u201d she said. \u201cTell me what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maisie opened her mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing came out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her eyes filled again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her mother kissed the top of her head. \u201cIt\u2019s okay. Just tell her what you told us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maisie shook her head. \u201cI can\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhy?\u201d Officer Price asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBecause then it\u2019s real.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Price nodded slowly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes even adults believed that. As long as the words stayed inside you, there was still a chance the terrible thing hadn\u2019t fully happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She glanced at the stuffed rabbit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDoes your bunny know what happened?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maisie sniffed. \u201cMr. Waffles saw everything.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOkay,\u201d Price said. \u201cMaybe Mr. Waffles can help.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maisie held the rabbit up slightly, then pulled him back to her chest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After a long silence, she whispered, \u201cIt was Goldie.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her father rubbed both hands over his face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her mother said softly, \u201cGoldie was her fish.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officer Price nodded. \u201cI understand.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maisie\u2019s eyes widened. \u201cYou knew?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo. But now I do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The little girl swallowed hard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGoldie lived in the bowl on my dresser. He was orange. Not yellow, even though his name was Goldie.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cImportant detail,\u201d Price said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe liked when I sang the pancake song.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe pancake song?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maisie nodded solemnly. \u201cMy own song.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSounds like Goldie had good taste.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maisie\u2019s mouth twitched, almost smiling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then fear rushed back in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBut then I wanted to pet him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her mother looked away, biting her lip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maisie\u2019s voice became smaller.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI know I wasn\u2019t supposed to. Mommy said fish are only for looking. But he looked lonely. He needed water. I got scared. Daddy said one time that people go to jail when they hide evidence, and I didn\u2019t know Goldie was evidence, but then he was gone, and I thought I hid him, and I thought you were gonna come to my house.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her father straightened, horrified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was a joke,\u201d he said quickly. \u201cI was watching some crime show, and I said something stupid about hiding evidence. I didn\u2019t think she even heard me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maisie turned to him, devastated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI heard you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI know, baby.\u201d His voice broke. \u201cI\u2019m so sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officer Price leaned forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMaisie,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The little girl looked at her through tears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI need to ask you something very important.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maisie\u2019s chin trembled. \u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDid you love Goldie?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maisie nodded hard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDid you try to hurt him?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo,\u201d she cried. \u201cI wanted to pet him because he didn\u2019t have friends.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDid you get scared?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd after you got scared, did you come here to tell the truth?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maisie nodded again, quieter this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officer Price sat back and let out a thoughtful breath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWell,\u201d she said, \u201cI\u2019ve heard enough.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maisie went rigid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her mother held her closer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officer Price stood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For one awful second, Maisie looked like she might scream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Price only walked to the front desk, took a yellow sticky note, and borrowed a pen from the dispatcher. THEY ARE TERRIBLE AT IT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For half a second, nobody moved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then Maisie\u2019s father made a sound that was half laugh, half sob.
