A young woman near the aisle raised her hand. \u201cI think it\u2019s fifty.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Professor Angleton stood motionless beside the chalkboard, watching them through his thick glasses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then Marcus, a confident student in the third row, lifted his hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSixty,\u201d he said. \u201cEach handshake involves ten fingers. Six times ten equals sixty.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Several students nodded. It sounded logical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMei. Hana. Marcus. Priya. Ethan. Jack. Noah. Come down here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The students exchanged confused looks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mei and Hana rose from the front rows. Marcus followed them. Priya closed her notebook and stood. Ethan, Jack, and Noah joined them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Professor Angleton arranged all seven students in a straight line at the front of the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSix,\u201d several students answered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This time, the students hesitated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
