Marcus followed them. Priya closed her notebook and stood. Ethan, Jack, and Noah joined them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Professor Angleton arranged all seven students in a straight line at the front of the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWatch carefully,\u201d he told the class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He nodded to Mei.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mei shook Hana\u2019s hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then Hana turned and shook Marcus\u2019s hand using the same hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marcus shook Priya\u2019s hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Priya shook Ethan\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ethan shook Jack\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, Jack shook Noah\u2019s hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Professor Angleton faced the class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHow many handshakes did you see?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSix,\u201d several students answered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd how many people participated?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This time, the students hesitated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSeven,\u201d someone finally said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Professor Angleton raised one hand and spread his fingers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEach person contributed five fingers. We are counting the fingers involved, not the number of times they moved.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He turned toward the chalkboard and wrote:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>7 \u00d7 5 = 35<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then he faced the class once more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThe answer is thirty-five.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lecture hall became completely silent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marcus slowly lowered his eyes.
